The Jerónimos Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the masterpiece of the Manueline architectural style, built in the early 16th century to commemorate Vasco da Gama's voyage to India. Its cloisters are among the finest in Europe, with intricate stone carving that blends Gothic, Renaissance and maritime motifs.
The Belém Tower, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, stood at the mouth of the Tagus as the last sight sailors saw when leaving Lisbon. The nearby Monument to the Discoveries, shaped like a caravel, celebrates the Portuguese explorers who charted the oceans. Both monuments line the riverside promenade with wide views over the Tagus.
Belém is the home of the original pastel de nata (pastel de Belém), the famous custard tart invented here in 1837. The bakery, located a short walk from the Jerónimos Monastery, still uses the original recipe, and the tarts are served warm with cinnamon and icing sugar.
The Ajuda neighbourhood, just inland from Belém, is home to the Ajuda National Palace, a neoclassical royal residence built in the 19th century. The palace's richly decorated interiors and the nearby Botanical Garden offer a quieter contrast to the monumental riverside.
