Fátima is one of the world's most important Catholic pilgrimage sites, located in central Portugal approximately 120 kilometres north of Lisbon. The Sanctuary of Fátima marks the site where, in 1917, three shepherd children reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary. The vast esplanade in front of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary can hold hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, particularly on the 12th and 13th of each month from May to October.
Batalha and Tomar nearby
The nearby town of Batalha, with its UNESCO-listed Gothic monastery commemorating the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota, and Tomar, former seat of the Knights Templar with its Convent of Christ, are often visited on the same itinerary.
