Fátima is one of the world's most important Catholic pilgrimage sites, located approximately 120 kilometres north of Lisbon. The Sanctuary marks the site where, in 1917, three shepherd children reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary. The vast esplanade in front of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary can hold hundreds of thousands of pilgrims.
The Batalha Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture built to commemorate the Portuguese victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. Its intricate stonework and stained glass are among the finest in Portugal.
Tomar was the former seat of the Knights Templar in Portugal. The Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contains the circular Templar church and centuries of architectural additions. The nearby Nabão River runs through the historic centre of the town.
