Óbidos is a beautifully preserved medieval walled town, known for its white-washed houses trimmed with yellow and blue, narrow cobbled streets and a complete 14th-century wall. The town was a wedding gift from Portuguese kings to their queens for centuries, which helped preserve its character. Visitors can walk along the fortified walls and explore the main street with its small shops and ginginha (cherry liqueur).
Nazaré is a fishing town on Portugal's Silver Coast that has become world-famous for its giant waves. The Praia do Norte, below the clifftop settlement of Sítio, regularly produces some of the largest surfable waves on the planet. The town itself retains its fishing-village character, with boats still pulled onto the beach.
The Alcobaça Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, founded in the 12th century by the first Portuguese king, Afonso Henriques. It is the largest church in Portugal and houses the tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro, whose tragic love story is one of the most famous in Portuguese history.
